Have you ever tried to install Windows 64bit on your mac? If you have done so, you already know that the process of installing and running Windows 64bit is absolutely fine.
Then you have to install Apple’s drivers from your Mac OS X dvd.
According to Apple, only a few intel based models are capable of running 64bit Windows which is not true.
The list of apple computers capable of running 64bit Windows, which is originally published by apple is the following (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846):
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009)
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2008) and later
- MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2008) and later
- Mac Pro (Early 2008) and later
- iMac (21.5 inch, Late 2009)
- iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
- iMac (27-inch, Quad Core, Late 2009)
- MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009)
- etc
Unfortunately, before the driver’s installation begins you may receive the following frustrating message:
Here is the solution to your problem. By following these steps you will be able to install windows 64bit drivers on your mac.
1 Go to Start > Computer. Then right click on your cd/dvd rom drive where the Snow Leopard (Mac OS 6.10) dvd appears and click open. 2 From there, move to Boot Camp > Drivers > Apple and right click by typing (Shift+F10) or by using an external mouse on the file with the name BootCamp64.msi. From the list of options appeared, select Troubleshoot compatibility.3 Wait a few seconds, and a screen like the following will appear. From this screen click on the “Start the program…” button and the installation process will begin.
4 When the drivers are installed, you might be asked to restart your computer. When the computer boots, install the latest bootcamp update for Windows 64bit and you are done.
Enjoy your Windows 64bit on your intel based mac!
YOU ROCK!!!! DUDE I LOVE MAC BUT I HATE THEIR PROPRIAETARY BULLCRAP!! Im running the install right now and no problems so far, THANKS!!!
This is great! Thank you very much!!
Yiu saved my day!!!
I had this same problem and worked through it a different way. For those posting that the “Troubleshoot Compatibility” doesn’t show up, make sure you try to run the msi first, letting it fail. I don’t think the option shows up unless it didn’t execute properly before.
If the troubleshoot compatibility still doesn’t work (which is what happened to me) you can easily edit the msi to remove the problem. Details on that are here: http://thistoolslife.blogspot.com/2011/02/install-bootcamp-31-on-non-supported.html
i get no option for ‘troubleshoot compatibility’ nothing on a drop down menu.no compatibility tab in properties. and starting the wizard only gives me the option to start as earlier versions of windows, or administrator.. no ‘skip version checking’ anywhere’ ..
is it not available in Vista basic?
Yes, probably is a limitation of the basic version of windows vista
Thanks, this will let me install the bootcamp drivers on a 2007 MB pro 15″!
I got through this step but I am still unable to access the internet because it doesn’t recognize the internal wireless card. How did you get around this?
I’m on a macbook pro 2010 running 10.6.6 with an i7 processor
You shouldn’t have followed this procedure. Your have the latest version of the macbook pro series, hence the windows drivers can be installed using the normal method from the snow leopard cd without receiving the error message “Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model”.
I’ve got the same problem as Terce, and the same configuration; so either we’re making the same mistake, or this isn’t as straightforward as Mike suggests.
This is strange because according to apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846) your system should support installing Win7 64bit without any problem. If this procedure was successful have you updated bootcamp to 3.2?
